The Magic of a Second Chance: How Whakaako is Changing Lives Through Mahi

Dec 17, 2025

There is a unique kind of magic that happens when someone is given not just a job, but a genuine opportunity to prove what they are capable of. At Whakaako, we see this magic every day.

Recently, The Post sat down with our founder, Jason, to discuss the heartbeat of what we do: helping people who have been overlooked or faced barriers find their way back into the workforce.

Bridging the Gap

For many in our community, the traditional path to employment can feel like a series of closed doors. Whether it’s a lack of formal experience, gaps in a CV, or simply needing a bit of extra support to build confidence, those barriers can feel insurmountable.

Whakaako was born out of a simple realization: there is an untapped pool of talent and potential in the Manawatū, but people often need a "bridge" to get where they want to go. We provide that bridge through hands-on work experience in trades—from fencing and landscaping to property maintenance.

More Than Just "Work Experience"

As Jason shared with The Post, our program is about more than just teaching someone how to handle a chainsaw or fix a fence (though those skills are vital!). It’s about:

  • Building Confidence: Seeing a project through from start to finish changes how a person sees themselves.

  • Creating Connections: We work closely with local businesses like Switched On Housing and Pro Industries, who aren’t just looking for workers—they’re looking for people with heart.

  • Holistic Support: From updating CVs and practicing interview skills to earning health and safety certificates, we ensure our participants are "work-ready" in every sense of the word.

Real Results, Real People

The most rewarding part of this journey is seeing where our participants go next. We’ve seen former students move into full-time apprenticeships, take on further study in fields like architecture, and become mentors for the next group coming through.

One of the most powerful points Jason made in the recent article is that we work with "all-sorts." Whether it’s a young person looking for their very first break or an older worker who has been overlooked for roles, we believe everyone deserves a pathway to success.

Join the Journey

We are so proud of the mahi being done here in the Manawatū, and we are grateful for the local trade partners who have stepped up to support this mission.

As we look to the future, our goal is to continue expanding these opportunities across even more industries. Because when one person finds meaningful work, it doesn’t just change their life—it strengthens their whānau and our entire community.

Want to get involved? Whether you’re a local business looking to partner with us, or someone looking for a fresh start, we’d love to hear from you.
